his lips, fighting the urge to shout back. He drove up to where she stood, shut off the engine, and pulled himself out of the window. He yanked the helmet off and chucked it onto the ground. While he stood there, fuming and confused, she ran onto the track with a glare.
“What the hell were you trying to pull out there?”
“I don’t know…drive?” What else could he say? Apologizing to her earlier hadn’t been good enough. “Why are you being so cold?”
She crossed her arms, refusing to look at him. “Just forget what happened between us. It’s best this way.”
“Like hell it is!” He reached out to touch her, but she shoved him away.
Tears glistened in her eyes, and the sight tortured him. “As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another staff member. Sure, you’ll be racing soon enough. Your skills on the track are more than impressive. But don’t think you’ll get any closer to me. You’ve proven I can’t trust you.”
His heart caved that very second.
She turned to walk away, but he reached out and spun her around. “Before you leave, just listen to one thing I have to say. Please, don’t blame me for what Bobby did to you. I would never do that to you. The one thing I’m guilty of is not beating the shit out of him when I had the chance. Believe me, I wanted to. But at the time, it was none of my business. I didn’t want you or your father thinking I was just trying to rat myself to the top.”
Her chin quivered and tears spilled over her cheeks. He felt like an asshole, but he had to tell the truth. He needed her to listen, and maybe give him a chance.
“Well, whatever your intentions were, you got what you wanted.” And she walked away, leaving him dumbfounded. What else could he say? How could he make her believe him?
He turned around, frustrated and confused by the whole situation. Right then, he caught a brief glimpse of a fist before it cracked him in the jaw.
He fell to the ground, stunned. The blurry vision of Bobby standing over him came into focus. “Caught you off guard, didn’t I? Guess my third grade education’s worth somethin’, ain’t it?”
Ty kicked his shin, making him stumble back. He took the chance to jump to his feet. Holding both fists in front of his face, he waited for the prick to come at him.
“I’m going to enjoy this, you little shit,” he said. “After what you did to her, you don’t deserve to stick around.”
    “And you think you do?”
They circled each other, waiting for the moment to strike.
“I’m the number one driver, and nobody’s gonna get in my way.” Bobby sneered. “Who, when, and where I fuck is no business of yours, banana boy.”
“Well it damn well is mine,” somebody added.
They both whirled around. Jonnie stood a few feet away, angry and hurt while he stared hard at Bobby. “And to think I thought of you like my own son. If it wasn’t for LeeLee giving you a chance, you’d still be wasted in some bar doing nothing with your life. You used my baby girl, and I don’t take to that at all. Consider your contract null and void. You can pack your shit and find another team.”
Bobby’s eyes widened. “You can’t void my contract, you fucking asshole. I’ll take you to court!”
The old man smiled. “And I’ll be waiting with a team of my best lawyers.”
“What about the World Bandit race?” Bobby shouted.
Jonnie winked at Ty. “Oh, don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll be just fine.”
Bobby lunged, but Ty feinted right and then swung left. The punch he landed to his jaw sent him flying back onto the dusty ground. Bobby was out cold. Ty stood over him, feeling just a little bit better that the fucker was finally silent.
He turned back to Jonnie. “What all did you hear?”
    “Enough.”
“I’m sorry. I never meant to—”
Jonnie raised his hand, shushing him. “Let me tell you something, son. Sometimes a father needs to stand back and let his little girl decide her own life. It was just a
