in harsh gasps and he clung to me with his shivering arms.
We lay like that for several minutes before the tremors died down. Our sweat dried and a chill ghosted over me. I shivered and Ethan raised his head to look into my eyes. "Cold?" he whispered.
"A little," I replied which was true. His body covered most of mine with his own heat.
Ethan reluctantly slid off me and grabbed a quilt from the foot of the bed. He wrapped me in the cloth and slipped on his pants to walk over to the fire and stoke the dying embers. In a moment the flames flickered high in the hearth and cast a bright glow on the room. I clutched the blanket and sat up, and blushed when his eyes fell on me. He smiled and moved to sit on the edge of the bed beside me.
"How do you feel?" he asked me.
"Tired," I replied. I shifted and winced. "And a little sore."
He chuckled. "You'll feel better in the morning."
I looked over his changed self. His ears were still pointed and his skin remained as pale as alabaster. "Do you. . .do you regret what you have done?" I wondered.
He noticed where my eyes lay, and reached up and touched his ears. "No. The consequences were worth the reward," he told me.
"My. . .my wealth?" I wondered. My mind still harbored doubts regarding his intentions.
Ethan grasped one of my hands and shook his head. "No, though I am sure your father will try his best to disinherit you when he sees your husband," he teased.
I snorted. "He will be tempted, but he knows the contract you hold will be accepted by all as a legal-binding document."
"I must admit I look forward to seeing his face when he learns of our marriage," Ethan commented.
My eyes flickered to the door. "My father may believe the marriage, but does the forest accept it?" I pointed out.
"There is still only one way to answer that question," he returned.
Ethan helped me from the bed and together we moved over to the entrance. He opened the door to the quiet night and we listened for the calls of the wolves of contract. Nothing. Just the soft sounds of crickets and frogs. I looked up into Ethan's face, and he down to mine. "It seems I am your wife," I mused.
"And a happier man there never was," he returned.
He wrapped his arms around me and embraced me in a kiss full of passion and his love for me. I returned the compliment and looked forward to my life with this man who was more than a man. He was my husband, my other self, and now we were bound together in a union created by a contract, but held together by love.
