drink vodka and spend his money. Because when they were sober, they were arguing.
After he had dissolved his business partnership with Dmitri and decided to move to the west coast, Nadia chose to stay in New York and they had little to do with each other for almost ten years other than the monthly deposits he made into her bank account. He was surprised that Nadia had agreed to the divorce after all this time, but then again, the six-figure check he included with the divorce papers may have aided in her decision.
When he arrived at the club, he was surprised at the number of cars in the parking lot. As he walked inside, his employees who had all grown to love Sarah, as well as all her family and friends greeted him. In addition to her immediate family, her brothers had all brought their spouses and children. It was a lively atmosphere as everyone waited on Sarah’s arrival.
After making the rounds a second time, Vitaly checked his watch. It was almost eight o’clock and Sarah was supposed to be there thirty minutes ago. He had texted her twice, but had yet to hear a response so he had asked security to check on her in case she had lost track of the time. As he stood for another toast, he happened to look toward the door and saw Ivan standing there scanning the room. When they made eye contact, he almost dropped his glass, as he strode quickly toward him.
    “Boss, there’s a problem.”
    “Where is she?”
    “Don’t know yet.”
“What’s going on? Where’s my daughter?” Bill Jenkins, Sarah’s father, demanded as he walked over.
“Sir, we’re trying to find out,” Ivan told him, as he attempted to pull Vitaly away to talk to him privately.
“Oh, no, you don’t,” Lisa declared, as she came to stand by Bill’s side. “You can talk in front of all of us.”
Both Ivan and Vitaly looked at each other as Sarah’s family and friends clustered around them demanding to know what was going on. At Vitaly’s nod, Ivan reached for his cell phone and pulled up a video to show him.
“Sarah logged out just after seven and security reports her exiting the building shortly thereafter. When I got your text, I sent a guard out to check the parking lot in case she was still there. He found her car unlocked with her bag and the keys on the ground next to it. When we checked the parking lot footage, we saw this.”
As Ivan talked, Vitaly watched a black Town Car similar to the one he used pull up alongside her car. As Sarah turned toward the car, the backdoor opened. He could see her bending to climb inside before stopping and backing away. At that point, the driver had come around behind her forcing her inside before jumping back in the car.
“I’m assuming she originally thought that you had sent the car.”
As the chatter in the room increased, Ivan held up his hand for silence, as Vitaly replayed the video.
“I’m very sorry to have to share this information in this manner, but I’ve been given little choice. Based on video surveillance, it looks as though Ms. Jenkins has been kidnapped,” he began, as he held up his hand once again for silence.
“The police have been notified and at present, we do not know who took her or why, but we are doing everything that we can to see that she is safely returned. Now if you’ll excuse me.” As Ivan turned to leave, he was hit with a barrage of questions. “I’m sorry that I can’t be of further help at this time.”
Grabbing Vitaly by the arm, he dragged him from the club. “Wait!” Bill called out, as he raced to catch up with them. “You can’t spring that on us and then simply leave.”
“I’m sorry, sir, but I had intended to speak with Mr. Chekov first. You were the one who insisted that I tell everyone. Now, if you’ll excuse us, Mr. Chekov is needed.” As Ivan pushed Vitaly into the back of the car, he turned back. “We’ll let you know as soon as we hear something. You have my word on that.”
As the car left the parking lot, Ivan
