energies it’s impossible to tell where Blade
begins and I end. We’re just a mass of sweaty flesh entwined in percale bed
sheets and downy pillows. What a reunion! If I’d have known it would be this
good I’d have gone away and come back sooner.

    Chapter Seven
    Unexpected Company

    Several Days Later…

I hate living out of hotels.
Sure I could stay with Blade but I’m not sure I am comfortable with that right
now. I have so many mixed feelings about him I don’t what to do. Alex’s partner
would love it if I moved in with Blade. That would make my job of getting in on
the inside of the club just that much easier.
Actually I would love to have
gone back home but after two years of not making my mortgage payments I’m
pretty sure the name Wells Fargo is on the deed of trust now, not Jennifer
Clarkson. Besides, I’m pretty sure anyone still looking for me would look there
first and not a hotel. By the time I’m slipping into my room it’s nearly one in
the morning and I am ready to sleep.
The hall lights flicker as I
trudge past the first three rooms on the way to mine. Of course the one above
my door is out so I can barely see to put my key in. I fumble around for a few
seconds before the lock opens. Next place I check into is going to have a card
key system not this antiquated key lock crap anymore. Exhausted I push the door
open when out of nowhere what feels like an NFL linebacker hits me across my
low back sending me sprawling on the floor face down. With a sudden whoosh all
the air in my lungs bursts out leaving me gasping for breath and unable to even
call out for help. A rough hand reaches around and covers my nose and mouth. An
unnecessary move considering I can’t even breathe with all his weight on my
chest.
    Someone once told me that
struggling is the best thing to do even if you don’t know self-defense. Just
the act of fighting back can be empowering and it makes you a difficult target.
Sometimes that’s enough. So I try. I elbow him in the ribs and strike out with
my heels behind me but from my position it’s all useless. There is no way I can
even begin to hurt him. My only chance will be if he decides to turn me over on
my back to rape me. Then I may be able to get at his eyes or throat.
    Violent hands grab at the
back collar of my blouse and rip in a downward motion causing the buttons on
the front to go flying as the thin material is torn from my body in one angry
motion. Then he grabs the strap from my bra but stops mid-motion. Instead of
ripping it off, he actually gasps.
    “What the fuck?” He growls.
    At first I’m confused. Why
the hell is he stopping now? Then when rough hands trace the crisscross of
scars across my back I realize what’s going on. Even in the dim light he’s just
seen my scars for the first time.
    “That’s just plain gross!” He
snarls. “Geez…you’re gonna have to put on a shirt or something now. I don’t
think I can do this now.”
“Why don’t you just flip her
over?” Another voice says.
    “What the fuck?”
    Yeah what the hell? There’s
another man in here, but it doesn’t sound like it’s a friend of this guy. I can
feel him twisting around to get a look at the new intruder whose voice sounds
strangely familiar but I know it can’t be who I think it is. That man I am sure
died in the Purge.
    “Get off her now!” Commands
the new voice.
    “Man you don’t know what
you’re getting involved with here so take a hike before you get hurt.”
“Oh I know exactly what I’m
getting in the middle of asshole. I’m a cop and unless you wanna go to jail for
attempted rape you get the fuck out of here.”
    I have a sudden sinking
feeling in my gut. No normal cop would give a rapist an out; unless he was on
the outs himself.
    “Come one shithead!” Shouts
the new voice. “Get your ass off of her and get out.”
Too slowly I feel my attacker
shifting around then getting up off of me. Before turning over I feel around
for my
