ASK THE ANAL ADVISOR: Anal Hair Removal
Q: Have you ever known of anyone using electrolysis or laser hair removal on their butt? Would it be safe and effective?

A: In electrolysis, an electrical current is used to destroy the hair follicle. There is a certain amount of pain with any electrolysis (some people describe it as a slight needle prick or a quick burning sensation), and because your anal area is sensitive to begin with, there’s probably more pain from the procedure there than, say, on your legs. Electrolysis treats one hair follicle at a time and requires multiple treatment sessions on each follicle to achieve a permanent result. Laser hair removal uses an infrared laser light directed at the hair. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment melanin, which then is transformed into heat energy to disable the hair follicle. A laser can treat hundreds of hairs at a time, so it can take less time than electrolysis. Laser treatment is less painful, but does not work on everyone, especially people with darker skin. The best results are achieved on people with fair skin around the ass and dark hair. It does not work on people with light-colored pubic hair or people whose hair and skin are close in color. Both laser treatment and electrolysis are expensive; however, they are both permanent after several (about four or five) treatments. It’s an investment in time and money and there are risks associated with both procedures. If these procedures interest you, do some research, and contact a licensed dermatologist or cosmetologist for a consultation.

Messy and more painful than shaving, waxing your ass generally lasts longer. While I know some folks who do their own waxing at home, I say leave it to the people who do it for a living. Find a licensed professional at a reputable salon that comes recommended by someone you know. Be prepared for it to hurt, like ripping a Band-Aid off your butthole. Your ass may be tender and a little swollen right after the procedure. Don’t get waxed right before an anal sex date; give your ass a day or two to recover.

CHAPTER 5
    Enemas
An enema is the process of introducing water (or another liquid solution) into the rectum to flush out the colon, rectum, and anal canal. As the water makes its way into your ass, it loosens fecal matter and stimulates the bowels. Although you don’t need to have an enema in order to have relatively safe and clean anal sex, some people prefer it. If you’re going to have lots of anal sex in one session or are planning to try large toys or fisting, then I definitely recommend an enema. For people who might be squeamish about any potential mess, an enema will not only clean their ass, but also give them reassurance and confidence. 1
As a solo activity, an enema can be accomplished relatively quickly, or you can take some time as part of an overall pre-sex ritual, where you bathe, shave, and prepare your body and mind for a hot date. This can serve not only to cleanse the body, but also to help ground you, help you meditate and think about what’s coming. It can also be something you share with your partner in preparation for a sexual experience. Some people enjoy giving or receiving enemas; they may get sexual pleasure from the
sensations an enema produces, the intimacy the process creates, or the taboo nature of doing anything involving bodily functions. (See chapter 13 for a discussion of erotic enema play.)
Whether by yourself or with someone, you can give (or take) an enema anywhere you feel comfortable. If you do it in the bathroom, when you feel the urge to go, you don’t have to go very far. You may feel more comfortable lying
